I. Origin and Evolution: From Top Hat Liner to Global Packaging Leader
1. In 1856, Edward G. Healy and Edward E. Allen from the United Kingdom invented the prototype of corrugated paper to keep the shape of top hats and applied for a patent. At that time, it was only used as hat lining, not for packaging.

2. In 1871, American Albert Jones applied for a patent for single-faced corrugated board, which was used to wrap fragile items such as glass bottles, marking the beginning of corrugated packaging.

3. In 1874, Oliver Long invented double-faced lined corrugated board, laying the foundation for the modern structure; in 1890, Robert Gair accidentally cut the cardboard with a metal ruler during printing, invented the pre-cut folded carton, and started large-scale production.

II. Corrugation Code: "Hidden Skills" of Different Corrugations

Corrugation Type                                            Characteristics                                           Typical Uses
A-Flute Good cushioning, average compression resistance Fragile goods, electronic products
B-Flute High flat compression resistance, good printability

Food, home appliances

C-Flute Balance of cushioning and stiffness

General goods

E/F-Flute Balance of cushioning and stiffness

High-end retail, cosmetics

III. Recycling and Environmental Protection: The "Limit" and Value of the Recycling Champion
1. The global recycling rate of corrugated cartons is about 90%-97%, making it one of the most recycled packaging materials. However, fibers can be recycled at most 3-7 times. Each recycling will make the fibers shorter and weaker, and new fibers need to be added eventually.

2. Compared with virgin pulp, each ton of recycled corrugated paper reduces carbon emissions by about 1.2 tons and water consumption by 28 cubic meters. Handling 100,000 tons of waste paper per year is equivalent to planting 60,000 adult trees.

3. The utilization rate of recycled fibers reaches 70%. From 2006 to 2020, the unit greenhouse gas emissions of U.S. corrugated products decreased by 50%, water consumption by 18%, and energy consumption by 13%.

IV. Process and Performance: The Neglected "Mechanical Magic"
1. For the corrugated bonding strength test, the needle needs to be inserted parallel to the corrugation peak at a constant separation speed, and the quality of the adhesive or base paper is diagnosed through the failure mode (fiber tearing or adhesive layer separation).

2. Delivery moisture is the benchmark for strength, with a standard of 6%-10%. Dampness or excessive dryness will significantly reduce strength, and most strength indicators need to be corrected based on standard moisture content.

3. Offset printing first prints the face paper and then laminates the corrugation, which will reduce the compression strength of the carton by about 10% because the corrugation is deformed during laminati

V. Cross-border Applications: "Hidden Identities" Beyond Packaging
1. During World War II, corrugated cartons accounted for 80% of transportation packaging, replacing some wooden boxes and becoming the main force in the transportation of military supplies.

2. It can be made into temporary buildings, furniture, sound insulation materials, and even art installations, such as temporary exhibition halls and modular bookshelves.

3. Some high-end corrugated boards are added with antibacterial coatings for fresh food packaging to extend the shelf life, meeting the needs of the cold chain.

VI. Industry Cold Data
1. In 2022, the U.S. corrugated industry produced 401 billion square feet of materials, about 40 billion packages, carrying more than 80% of transported goods.

2. 85% of European corrugated packaging contains recycled fibers, and 90.6% of raw materials come from certified forests, promoting sustainable development.

3. With VAT preferential policies and carbon credit trading for recycled corrugated paper, each ton can bring additional tax rebates and 85 yuan of carbon credit income, improving enterprises' enthusiasm for recycling.

These knowledge not only show the technical precipitation of the industry, but also provide reference for corrugated machinery selection, packaging scheme design and environmental protection strategy formulation.
